Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have secured a new multi-year first-look deal with Netflix through their Archewell Productions company. The agreement gives the streaming platform the first option to consider any of their upcoming film and television projects.
The new arrangement represents a significant shift from their original 2020 contract, which was worth over £74 million. The current deal requires Netflix approval before any compensation is provided, making it less financially secure than their previous guaranteed payment structure.
Strategic role division emerges
Royal commentator Jennie Bond believes the deal highlights a clear division of responsibilities between the couple. She told The Mirror: "It seems clear that this deal is very much Meghan's project. It seems [Harry] may have played some part in the production of a documentary about a Ugandan orphanage, but it is Meghan who will be on screen, presenting her lifestyle shows."
Bond added: "I think this underlines that the couple has decided that Meghan is really the TV personality, and Harry is more comfortable continuing his charity work. And I think that's the right balance for them."
Mixed performance record
The couple's track record with Netflix shows varying degrees of success. Their documentary series Harry & Meghan became one of Netflix's most-watched documentaries, attracting 23.4 million views and containing critical commentary about the Royal Family.
However, other projects have struggled to find audiences. Harry's series on polo failed to achieve similar engagement levels, while Meghan's lifestyle show With Love, Meghan did not enter Netflix's top 300 most-watched shows in its first six months.
Christmas special and brand timing
The deal announcement coincided with the trailer release for the second season of With Love, Meghan. The upcoming series will include a Christmas special filmed at the couple's Montecito home, with timing that coincides with launches from Meghan's As Ever lifestyle brand.
Bond defended the renewed partnership despite criticism. She said: "The fact that Harry and Meghan have got any kind of new deal with Netflix really is one in the eye to everyone who said their contract was done and dusted. Netflix has publicly hailed them as 'influential voices' - and it's hard to argue with that."
